In March 1973, Fireside Studios opened as Nashville’s newest recording facility. A joint venture of Dolly Parton, Dolly’s Uncle Louis Owens, and Porter Wagoner, the new studio provided a convenient location for both full and demo sessions and to hear special projects.
With the new studio in place, Dolly wanted to preserve some of her mother’s songs on tape. Avie Lee Parton made the trip to Nashville, and under the supervision of her brother, Louis Owens, recorded Avie Lee’s personal arrangements of several a dozen traditional mountain tune. Fifty years later, the recordings stand as an outstanding showcase of Avie Lee’s striking, strong, and expressive singing voice, filled with traditional Appalachian phrasing.
Never before released, this collection is not only a peek into the creative wellspring from which Dolly Parton’s talent flowed but is also a fascinating record of a unique American voice.
