Recorded mostly in 1979 in anticipation of her of her first (and only) tour as performing folk artist, Smoky Mountain Mama captures Avie Lee Parton performing mountain ballads and traditional songs with a full band. These were songs she had learned as a child, sang to her own children, and would continue to sing to her grandchildren for years to come. Released in 1990 on a now rarer-than-hen’s-teeth cassette, this remastered album captures one of the most musically influential mothers of traditional American music at the top of her form.
